[Gentle
Reader: I have used this data, extracted from the 1838
New Bedford City Directory, to give students an introduction to how primary
sources might be used. We start with Jef Bolster’s book Black Jacks, and used
the Directory to “check his work.” The assignment is easily adaptable to
different grade levels.

is the assignment, taken verbatim from the syllabus,
